CHLORINE IN WATER 

Chlorination of water supplies and contaminated water is used primarily to kill or inactivate disease-causing microorganisms. Chlorine also improves the quality of drinking water, as it reacts with ammonia, iron, manganese, sulfides and some organic matter. However, high levels of chlorine can cause side effects such as the formation of compounds that are potentially carcinogenic (e.g. chloroform) or harmful to aquatic life (e.g. chloramines). Controlling the amount of chlorine added is still necessary to achieve the primary purpose of disinfection while minimizing any side effects.
