AMMONIA IN CLEAN WATER

Groundwater often contains ammonia due to the bacterial decomposition of plants and animals. However, ammonia concentrations in rivers and drinking water reservoirs can indicate the presence of agricultural runoff or urban pollution. When ammonia concentrations are high enough, it can alter the taste and odor of water. In industrial applications, high concentrations of ammonia can cause corrosion in pipes. Ammonia also needs to be monitored in freshwater aquariums and fish farming applications because it is toxic to fish.
